CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE – Middle Township High School student Justen Wen is getting a jump start on figuring out what’s next after high school. The junior was recently nominated by the district and awarded the Rensselaer Medal Award — worth $120,000 in scholarship funding.

Wen was thrilled when he received the news he was nominated by his school counselor, Angelica Brown. The award is Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute’s premier merit scholarship which recognizes outstanding math and science students.

This scholarship is guaranteed for four years for each Medalist who accepts and enrolls at Rensselaer, a value of $30,000 per year. Wen will apply to Rensselaer over the summer and if accepted, he will likely pursue a degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering and/or Math (STEM) related field.

“It’s students like Justen who motivate other students and even staff to strive for success,” said MTSD Superintendent Dr. David Salvo.  “We can provide our students the tools to get there, but it’s their own dedication and due diligence that helps them achieve it.”

Wen earned academic honors from the College Board National Recognition Programs during his sophomore year at MTHS along with the National Rural and Small Town American Recognition Award (NRSTA). The programs grant underrepresented students academic honors that can be included on college and scholarship applications and connects students with universities across the country, helping them to stand out during the admission process.

In conjunction with over 5,000 schools worldwide, Rensselaer has been awarding this scholarship for over a century. Selection criteria for the Rensselaer Medal Award are sent to participating schools each year in March with nominations due by May 1.
